Description

For students enrolled in the MTchLn, the Research Project is an optional research course designed to provide an opportunity for extended research. Students who do not choose this course are required to complete either EDTL904 Research Dissertation or EDTL905 Research Thesis. It would be expected that a research project would be undertaken towards the end of the degree. For students enrolled in the PGDipTchLn, EDTL802 is a compulsory course. This course is also available through flexible mode.

Learning Outcomes

EDTL802 Learning Outcomes and Course Requirements
The Research Project research shall enable participants to

  1. identify a contemporary relevant educational topic, worthy of research and small enough to be manageable within the time and credit margins of the course;
  2. consider ethical issues and carry out requirements of the UCCE Ethical Clearance Committee;
  3. conduct a review of the relevant literature that locates the project with the content, methodology and theory of that literature;
  4. create a research design that communicates the intent of the research project;
  5. present the previous learning outcomes as a research proposal;
  6. conduct accountable research, i.e. research that satisfies any criteria for rigorous research methodology or codes of ethics that might be put up against it, including descriptions and justifications of the collection and analysis of empirical materials;
  7. write a research report of 7000 to 10,000 words that adheres to the above.

Timetable Note

Students are required to

   * write a research proposal and present it to their supervisor for approval by the MTchLn Research Committee (outcomes 1, 3, 4 and 5 above);
   * Follow the University of Canterbury College of Education ethical guidelines for the conduct of research for approval by the College Ethical Clearance Committee (outcome 2);
   * Conduct independent research and discuss it with a supervisor according to a timetable agreed by the student and the supervisor (outcomes 3 and 6);
   * Present for examination a research report of 7,000 - 10,000 words excluding abstract, appendices and bibliography (outcome 7).
