Description

This course will concentrate on ways in which resilience, health and positive developmental trajectories may be promoted in infants, children and adolescents. Current research and theoretical models will be used to explore a number of critical issues related to health and wellbeing in a New Zealand context.

Drawing on developmental science and positive psychology theories and research, EDUC204 explores how developmental processes can promote wellbeing and health in infants, children and adolescents.

What is Positive Youth Development? How does a strength-based approach promote 'thriving'?  Can peer relationships and peer pressure actually promote positive development?  How does the development of identity, self-regulation, effortful control, and empathy promote welling?  Why is there an increased tendency for adolescents to engage in risk-taking behaviour?  How effective are health education programmes for preventing drug and alcohol abuse?  These are just some of the questions that will be addressed in EDUC204.

Learning Outcomes

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the foundational tenets of resilience, positive youth development, and strength-based theories.
2. Students will apply the core concepts of developmental science to the promotion of wellbeing and health.
3. Students will demonstrate basic principles for evaluating evidence-based literature.
4. Students will demonstrate an emerging understanding of the multidimensional and complex nature of developmental processes that contribute to wellbeing and health.
