The course aims to educate students on the basic and creative concepts of advanced energy technologies and its systems integration. By covering the different areas of emerging technologies from fossil fuel conversion, ultraclean fuel production and utilisation, solar photovoltaic conversion to hydrogen and energy storage, the course prepares students for these revolutionary technologies. Importantly, rather than focusing solely on ultimately renewable energy solutions, the course incorprates the complementary views of fossil but ultraclean fuel technologies, as well as their importance as intermediate energy solutions.
The following topics are taught in this course:• Energy storage technologies including mechanical, electrochemical (batteries), and thermal energy storages; different types of vehicles with respect to energy sources; advanced materials for efficient energy storage/processing (6 L). • Heat and power generation (3L).• CO2 capture and reuse (2L). • Hydrogen and syngas productions (10L): o Biomass and organic solid waste resources in New Zealand;o Gasification technology;o Pyrolysis technology;o Gas processing for hydrogen and syngas;• Liquid fuel, biodiesel and bio-ethanol production processes (3L). • Hydrogen from renewable electricity and hydrogen use for energy (2L).• Sustainability assessment for energy systems and optimisation (5L).
At the end of this course, the students are expected to:Understand the technologies and systems of energy storage.Understand the difference among vehicles with different sources of energyUnderstand issues and potential opportunities in energy sector. Understand the technologies and systems for production of liquid fuels, syngas, hydrogen from various renewable resources.Understand the technologies to mitigate the environmental issues in the energy sector with focus on CO2 capture.Be able to assess the efficiency and the sustainability of energy systems.
