Description

Introduction to transportation engineering. Geometric design of roads. Surveying fundamentals. Surveying camp.

Learning Outcomes

This course will introduce you to

▪ Fundamental concepts of transportation,
▪ Driver behaviour, traffic flow, highway capacity
▪ Principles of geometric design for roads
▪ Basics of field surveying, mapping, setting out


Expected student skills

▪ Handle plans and complete/oversee engineering surveys
▪ Understand basic principles of traffic flow, geometric design, human factors

Timetable Note

Survey Camp (Living Springs, Lyttelton Harbour)

Students are required to attend the First Professional Survey Camp. Field and calculation work at the camp form part of the examination for ENCN261 Transport and Surveying. In 2021 there are two occurrences, Sunday 4 April through to and including Friday 9 April AND Sunday 18 April through to and including Friday 23 April. Students must attend one. You will be advised as to which one you will be assigned to closer to the time but for now you must keep both occurrences free.

To achieve a pass in the course:


A minimum 50% overall grade for the year
At least 40% in each of the surveying and transport coursework
At least 40% of the test
At least 40% in each of the Transport and surveying components of the final exam"
