Description

Water quality parameters; mass balances; kinetics; surface water quality modelling; ecological systems; treatment of water, wastewater, solid and hazardous wastes; air pollution.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of the course, students will be able to…

  • Describe the scope of application of environmental engineering, particularly as it relates to water and wastewater quality;
  • Calculate some of the most important water quality parameters from experimental data
  • Perform mass balances and predict contaminant behaviour in the environment based on reactor hydraulics and kinetics;
  • Describe concepts for water and wastewater treatment;
  • Understand systems theory, ecosystem structure and dynamics;
  • Describe solid and hazardous waste management; and
  • Understand principles of air pollution management and control.

Assignment Details

You cannot pass this course unless you achieve a mark of at least 40% in both the term test and the final exam. A student who narrowly fails to achieve 40% in one of these particular individual assessment items, but who performs very well in the other, may be eligible for a pass in the course at the discretion of the course coordinator.

Students may apply for Special Consideration for Assessment to allow for special cases (illness, etc.) that affect performance on tests. Special Consideration for Assessment will not be considered for the water quality assignment, mass balance assignment, water and wastewater treatment assignment, ecosystems assignment or the coagulation/flocculation lab, although students may discuss late submittals of these with the instructor in charge of that particular assessment. A penalty will be assessed for late assignments. The penalty for this course has been set at 20 % per day of the actual marks available for the item of assessment. In evaluating grades involving Special Consideration for Assessment, the tests are considered separately from other assessment. Because a number of courses are usually affected when ill fortune strikes, students should see the first professional co-ordinator when difficulties arise.

In addition, there are several copies in the library of Environmental Engineering - Fundamentals, Sustainability, Design by James R. Mihelcic and Julie Beth Zimmerman. This book is very useful for ENCN281.
