Description

Fundamental relationships between structure, processing, physical properties and performance for metallic, ceramic, polymeric and composite materials.

Learning Outcomes

  • Washington Accord (V4) Summary of Graduate Attributes attained in this course:
     WA1 – Engineering Knowledge
     WA2 – Problem Analysis
     WA4 – Investigation

  • Course topics with Learning Outcomes (and Washington Accord (WA) and UC Graduate Attributes) identified.

    1. Atomic, crystalline and microscopic structure of metallic, ceramic, polymeric and composite materials.
1.1. Identify the major properties of the different classes of materials (metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, and electronic materials) (WA1)
    2. Crystalline defects and diffusion, Mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms, Metal forming, Fracture mechanisms and failure analysis, Thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations, Solidification processing of metal and plastics, Corrosion, Materials selection
2.1. Recognize the interdependence of the structure, properties, processing, and performance of materials, and able to describe the important parameters that govern the relationships between these four categories (WA1)
    3. Laboratories
3.1. Integrate fundamental materials science with laboratory synthesis and processing, as well as analysis of experimental data (WA2, WA4) (EIE3)
    • University Graduate Attributes

This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:

Critically competent in a core academic discipline of their award

Students know and can critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within their majoring subject.

      Employable, innovative and enterprising

Students will develop key skills and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.
