Deepen and broaden education of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering in the essential elements of instrumentation and sensing technologies. Statistical techniques for measurement data analysis, measurement uncertainty analysis, measurement system modelling and analysis, mechanical measurements, motion measurement and control, signal conditioning, industrial and sensor networks, instrument design using Labview.
This new course ENME423 Instrumentation and Sensors is an advanced coverage of instrumentation and sensing techniques for Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Electrical Engineering students. It will raise the students to such a high competency level that they possess professional insights in constructing and developing instrumentation systems that are required in designing complex electromechanical system encountered in the real world. The students will therefore benefit from being exposed to a broad range of instrumentation techniques, sensors/transducers and their applications, and data acquisition. A strong indicator of industrial needs is that a large portion (as high as 50% in some years) of our final year research projects requires instrumentation to some degree. The course expands students’ knowledge in instrumentation and sensors following their Second Professional Year education. The course outline:(a) Knowledge:• Statistical techniques for measurement data analysis• Measurement uncertainty analysis• Measurement system modelling• Analysis and design of dynamic measurement• Measurement of fluid and flow• Force measurement• Motion measurement and control• Signal conditioning• Industrial and sensor networks• Labview tutorials(b) Skills and application• Eighteen hours of instrument design using LabviewDistinctive feature:This course is to put practical instrumentation design skills to the students through designing an instrument for vibration measurement and analysis using Labview. Apart from theoretical knowledge, the course features many examples of problem solving for mechanical measurements.
Learning Outcomes and National Qualifications Framework (NQF)Knowledge outcomes:Theoretical understanding and application of statistical techniques for measurement data analysis.In-depth understanding and application of key principles for measurement error analysis.Understanding of measurement system characteristics and modelling.Fundamental understanding of instrumentation techniques including signal processing and conditioning, noise, and filtering.Critical understanding of sensing techniques for mechanical measurement of fluid, flow, force and motion.Familiarity with MEMS transducers.Familiarity with Industrial and sensor networks.Skills outcomes: Analyse instrumentation and sensing requirements through knowledge application.Conceptualise and design instrumentation methods for complex electro-mechanical systems through synthesis of information and instrumentation system modelling.Generate instrumentation solutions through application of sensing principles and signal processing techniques.Design and implement instrumentation systems using Labview.Approach complex instrumentation problems through application of emerging sensing technologies and industrial and sensor network.Personal attributes developed:Develop generic skills in project management, project documentation and reportingDevelop professional skills in acquiring and applying the knowledge outside the classroom through design of a real-life instrumentation system.
