Honours Research
There are two distinct pathways in the fourth and final year of study. Students may continue into the fourth year in the Bachelor of Fine Arts programme (NQF Level 7) or, if they satisfy the requirements, may choose to transfer into the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours (NQF Level 8). Students in the Honours programme will enrol in FINA450 Honours Research. FINA450 is a NZQF Level 8 course which will provide high-achieving students with an advanced research pathway in their fourth year of study. This course, while still being vocationally relevant, will focus on developing specific skills and knowledge needed to move into post-graduate study. FINA450 is a 120-point course and will make up the entire programme of study for the final year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours.
Within the chosen studio disciplines the student who passes FINA 450 will:- have advanced research skills with which to move seamlessly into Masters level study;- be able to articulate complex ideas successfully in an academic and/or professional context;- exhibit an advanced specialised technical and theoretical knowledge of contemporary art practice;- be critically aware of underpinning key principles of both the discipline and profession of contemporary art practice;- be able to participate confidently in cross-disciplinary projects and discourses;- be critically aware of the role contemporary art practice plays in society;- have the necessary specialist knowledge and skills with which to enter professional practice/industry as an engaged and critical participant;- be critically aware of, and able to communicate successfully with, private and institutional bodies that will support their ongoing practice (funding, exhibiting, residencies, etc);- understand how to initiate and develop their own projects/practice within the support of institutional frameworks.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:
Critically competent in a core academic discipline of their award
Students know and can critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within their majoring subject.
Employable, innovative and enterprising
Students will develop key skills and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.

Students will be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand, and its relevance to their area of study and/or their degree.

Students will have observed and understood a culture within a community by reflecting on their own performance and experiences within that community.

Students will comprehend the influence of global conditions on their discipline and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.
