Description

This course is for those who have little or no previous knowledge of the French language. It provides students with a knowledge of basic grammatical structures and vocabulary, and an understanding of some everyday French social customs and non-verbal communication.

FREN120 is an introductory course for students who have little or no previous knowledge of French.  It is NOT for students who have done three or more years of French at school.

There is an important online component to this course, accessed via the university's "Learn" system (see "Course links" below).

Learning Outcomes

  • As a student in this course you will acquire skills in all four areas of the French language: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
    FREN120 provides a preliminary course to enable you to:
  • read French at a beginner's level;
  • speak and understand French at a beginner's level;
  • develop a sympathetic and informed understanding of the ways of thought and forms of expression of the French;
  • develop the personal skill of awareness of this foreign language;
  • acquire sufficient language skills in order to proceed to FREN122.

You have to attend all of the above activities!

(Explanation: some courses have two or three repeats of the same activity, for example two or three of lectures A, B, C and D, or a number of tutorial A times to choose from; in these cases students only have to attend one of these repeat activities per week).
