Extended field work and related exercises aimed at broadening geological experience in the understanding and interpretation of rocks at outcrop, field map, and regional scales.
The field trip is a field mapping exercise at Castle Hill, building on the introduction to geological mapping in GEOL230 and focussing on the structure that builds the Southern Alps and the geomorphology resulting from the recent glaciations. The structural mapping concentrates on the complex folding as being expressed by a limestone unit. The geomorphology part has two components: (1) at Castle Hill the link between the structural and geomorphic evolution will be looked at and (2) slope processes and glacial histories will be addressed at either Winding Creek or the Poulter Confluence. The course is designed to complement GEOL351. Field teaching takes place off-campus and a reasonable degree of physical fitness is desirable.
(1) GEOL230; (2) GEOL231; (3) 44 points from other GEOL 200 level courses.
GEOL329, GEOL330
14 points from any papers in GEOL331-GEOL338 offered in the same semester.

Students must have completed successfully GEOL230 and GEOL231 and 44 points from other GEOL200 courses. You must also take 14 points from other GEOL300 level courses as corequisites. GEOL352 (with GEOL351) is a prerequisite for all 400 level and postgraduate courses in Geological Sciences (except Diploma in Engineering Geology).Field trip to Castle Hill 16-22 February 2008.The course fee payable at enrolment includes $32 to cover travel, accommodation and equipment. Meals (breakfast, packed lunch, dinner) will be provided at the field venues and will be charged separately at the rate of $15 per day ($90 preferably payable prior to leaving). The forms for payment will be both in Room 108a (Geological Sciences building on the outside of the door in times when Cathy and Louise are not around) and with Pat in Room 334. Once the student has paid the cashier in Registry she/he will need to put the receipt into a box outside the door of Room 108a.
