Description

Building written and spoken communication skills level I. This is the first of two intermediate German language courses. This course aims at extending vocabulary and grammatical structures which will be used to discuss and write about simple topics in contemporary German and German-speaking culture and society.

This course will work on all four language skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will complete regular grammar and writing assignments as well as have ample opportunity to speak and listen in the classroom setting. Throughout we will emphasize building vocabulary and communication skills which will be used to discuss German contemporary culture and current events. All students will practice some reading skills by reading short excerpts from literary texts.

By the end of the course students should be able to read and understand information on contemporary Germany and a simple short fictional text (3-4 pages). The average student will be able to understand short conversations on topics of everyday life and use essential vocabulary and structures in order to speak about various aspects of their own life.

The course meets four times a week. Three of the hours are devoted primarily to work with the textbook and workbook. The fourth hour is a tutorial which is run in two different streams. Students will be advised to choose either tutorial A or tutorial B. Selected grammar exercises will be done in both tutorial streams, but the two separate tutorials give students options to choose between studying the language by reading more short prose texts or do practical exercises in order to close gaps in reading skills and grammar.

This course leads on to GRMN118 Intermediate German B.
