Description

Building written and spoken communication skills level II. This is the second of two intermediate German language courses. This course extends the reading, writing and discussion skills acquired in GRMN117 and places greater emphasis on writing and reading skills, especially the reading of short 20th century prose texts and short stories.

This course will work on all four language skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will complete regular grammar and writing assignments as well as have ample opportunity to speak and listen in the classroom setting. Throughout we will emphasize building vocabulary and communication skills which will be used to discuss  contemporary German culture and current events. The course also builds on the reading and discussion skills acquired by reading shorter literary texts as practiced in GRMN117 and gives an even greater emphasis to writing and reading skills, especially the reading of short 20th century prose texts and short stories.

By the end of the course students should be able to read short newspaper and magazine articles and up to medium length fictional texts and understand their content. The average student will be able to engage in conversations with native speakers about every day topics, and will have knowledge of the main grammatical structures of the German language. At the end of the course students should be able to pass the Zertifikat Deutsch examination of the Goethe Institute.
The course meets 4 times a week. Three of the hours are devoted primarily to work with the textbook and workbook. The fourth hour is a tutorial-style lecture which alternates in its focus between selected grammar exercises, reading and discussion of fictional texts, and, more towards the end, preparation for the Zertifikat Deutsch (sitting the certificate examination is optional).

This course leads on to GRMN210 Advanced Intermediate German A.
