German language course for beginners, i.e. students with no knowledge of German, based on the communicative approach.
GRMN151 is an introduction to German that is especially designed for people with no prior knowledge of the language. The course is run in several different streams which meet 4 times each week. Our language courses are based on the theory that you learn best by doing. Thus the focus of these meetings is on active student-to-student communication in German as much as possible with supplemental explanations of grammar. Continuous learning is mirrored in the course’s continuous internal assessment: a large portion of the final grade is obtained through a series of small tests and regular homework assignments. By the end of the course most students will find that they possess a good basic command of German, one that enables them to express quite a few things about themselves and that further allows them to engage other German speakers in a variety of everyday situations. The textbook in GRMN151 is Kontakte in its current edition; although not cheap, it is essential to the course and is additionally used in GRMN152, the second half year course which follows on from GRMN151.
