This course aims to develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a project manager, the challenges of IS project management, and the tools and techniques for successful IS project management.
This course introduces students to the role and responsibilities of a project manager, the challenges of IS project management, and the application of tools and techniques for successful management within the IS project life cycle. Although project management has been an established field for many years, managing information technology projects requires ideas and information that go beyond standard project management. The course will address the theoretical and practical aspects of IS project management associated with various development environments.Though the emphasis of INFO313 is managing IS projects, the course can benefit students aiming to be a business professional or manager in any area, not just those aiming for a career in IS.
At the end of this course, students should be able to:* Develop an IS project charter including the business case* Estimate and manage the IS project scope including methods to prevent scope escalation* Develop and manage the IS project schedule, including a work braekdown structure, task estimates and dependencies, and resource requirements* Estimate and manage IS project costs and cash flows* Develop procedures to control the quality of the final result* Assign and monitor IS project resources including managing the teams and team members* Maintain good IS project communication including internal and external communication* Assess and address IS project risks including developing contingency plans and mitigation plans* Manage vendors and other resource providers, and understand issues of out-sourcing* Use project management tools (e.g. MS Project) to help plan and manage IS projects
