Description

This course aims to develop an understanding of business processes and how they can be analysed and improved using IT. Process mapping skills for 'as-is' and 'to-be' business processes are developed and practiced, as well as techniques for change analysis, problem finding and resolution, technology impact analysis, benchmarking, error proofing and change management.

INFO360  reviews key concepts and approaches to business process management and improvement. The main focus of this course is both understanding and designing business processes. Students will learn to use a structured approach to identify, document, model, assess, and improve core business processes. Students will gain knowledge in business process modelling at three distinct levels using the BPMN 2.0 notation. BPMN supports business process management both for technical and business users. It provides a standard notation understandable by all stakeholders including analysts, developers and business sponsors. This course defines and explains groups of elements from the latest release BPMN 2.0 and utilizes use cases and examples. The way in which information technology can be used to manage, transform, and improve business processes is discussed.

  • Identify business processes within an organisation, their boundaries and interrelations, and prioritise their management using different criteria.
  • Model business processes at different levels using modern business process modelling techniques.
  • Assess business process performance by applying qualitative and quantitative techniques.
  • Identify and analyse business improvement opportunities based on business process models.
  • To evaluate and discuss how the designed process can be automated using information systems and technology.
  • Apply the acquired knowledge and skills in the context of a real-life scenario.
    To achieve these objectives, the course will provide a blend between theories, concepts and practice.

(1) 15 points at 200 level from INFO, COSC or SENG; and (2) An additional 15 points at 200 level from the Commerce Schedule
