This course is designed for students with NCEA Level 2 Japanese language or equivalent. At the end of the course, students should be able to understand and actively use basic modern Japanese grammar and vocabulary, and read and write the kana syllabaries, and approximately 150 characters.

Pre-requisites: a pass in JAPA 141, or Level 2 NCEA with 15 credits or above in Japanese, or equivalent. Direct entry without these pre-requisites is through placement test and approval of the Programme Director.
