Description

This course builds upon Japa 142. By the end of it students will have acquired a knowledge of basic Japanese grammar and will also have learned a total of 380 kanji and approximately 2,000 words and phrases.

This course is for students who have passed JAPA 142  or equivalent, Bursary Japanese, or NCEA Level 3, or who have gained direct entry through a placement test. You should be able to read and write all the Hiragana and Katakana characters as well as at least 100 kanji, and have knowledge of basic Japanese grammar and approximately 1,000 words and phrases.

Topics that will be covered in the course include everyday situations, such as expressing one's abilities and preferences, offering and seeking help, asking for and explaining meanings, reporting incidents and facts, consulting a doctor, expressing intentions, asking for and giving advice, asking for and giving directions and instructions, expressing one's decisions and schedules, making appointments, and conducting a survey.

Learning Outcomes

  • The major focus in our language programme is to help you read, write, listen, and speak Japanese in a fluent manner, and JAPA153 provides this foundation. At the end of the course, you will have mastered:
  •   an additional 222 kanji and approximately 1,100 new words and phrases
  •   further basic grammar that enables you to communicate in a more sophisticated manner
  •   written Japanese that enables you to read and write increasingly complex text
  •   better understanding of Japanese culture and society.

Prerequisites

Japa 142, or
Level 3 NCEA with 15 credits or above in Japanese, or
equivalent. Direct entry without a formal prerequisite is through a placement test and approval of the Programme Director.
