Description

JAPA142 continues on from JAPA 141. By the end of the course students should be able to understand and actively use basic modern Japanese grammar and vocabulary and read and write the kana syllabaries and approximately 170 kanji characters.

JAPA142 is an elementary course for students with a little previous knowledge of the Japanese language. The course aims to build upon the reading, writing and speaking skills gained in JAPA141, further cultivating skills in all four areas of language acquisition - reading, writing, listening and speaking. The texts used are especially designed to develop each of these areas. Topics covered in the course will include everyday situations such as greetings, introductions, shopping, telling the time and ordering at a restaurant.

The course combines traditional instruction with communication-oriented interaction and oral/audio visual exercises in the computer laboratory. There are five contact hours per week, with four hours of classroom teaching and one hour in the computer lab. Classroom work is supported by addiitional on-line exercises.
