Description

This is a final year course for students majoring in Japanese. A wide variety of materials is used with the aim of further advancing students' reading and writing abilities in Japanese, as well as their aural/oral skills. Completion of this course will bring the total of kanji studied to approximately 1,100.

JAPA305 follows on directly from JAPA205, which is the pre requisite. It is designed to bring students to a high standard of reading and writing in modern Japanese. The target is to reach a level roughly equivalent to the Japanese Language Proficiency Level 2. Since most basic grammar has already been covered, the new grammar that is introduced in this course is generally an expansion and refinement of that already known. Materials used include certain advanced textbook items as well as newspapers, literary short stories, and other appropriate material produced for native speakers. One of the five hours of class time per week is conducted in the language lab. This is deemed an important component of the course, being the main opportunity for students to improve their aural and oral comprehension ability in modern spoken Japanese.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the JAPA 305 course will have increased their proficiency and confidence in applying the four major ares of language learning (reading, speaking, writing and listening) to a wide range of situations and materials, much of which - particularly with regard to reading and related comprehension - is at native-speaker level.
