Description

An introduction to Maori culture, society and heritage including: the origins of the Polynesians, traditional navigation, the renaissance of voyaging; Maori astronomy; a Maori geography of the North and South Islands; lore of the natural world; social organisation; the meeting house and customary practice; spiritual beliefs; Maori arts, creation traditions; the demigods Maui and Tawhaki; and selected tribal histories.

An introduction to traditional Maori culture, including: settlement of the Pacific, Polynesian origins; traditional navigation, the renaissance of canoe voyaging; creation traditions, gods of the natural world, mythological origins of life and death, demigods - Maui, Tawhaki and Whaitiri; traditional astronomy and the New Year stars; forest plants as food and traditional medicines; a Maori geography of New Zealand; social organisation, women in Maori society; land, fortifications, the meeting house, spiritual beliefs, customary rituals; warfare, weapons, war canoes and cannibalism; wood, bone and greenstone carving, weaving, tattoo, haka; and selected tribal oral histories.

Learning Outcomes

MAOR107 aims to:

1. Provide students with an introductory knowledge of the forms and functions of Maori traditions and customs.
2. Familiarise students with contemporary Maori culture and tradition.
3. Give an appreciation of the heritage of Maori origin stories.
4. Examine manifestations of the Maori component of New Zealand identity.

Timetable Note

In additional to the lectures there are one hour tutorials held each week.  The tutorial times will be arranged during the first week of lectures.

MAOR107 is designed as a companion course to the second semester paper MAOR108.  We strongly encourage students to enrol in both papers. The understanding provided by these courses is essential for anyone who will be pursuing a career in the New Zealand of the 21st century.
