MAOR108 provides an overview of the Treaty of Waitangi. The course considers the historical background to the Treaty of Waitangi and its place in New Zealand law, politics, public policy, and society. Topics include: the origins of the Treaty in Maori and European contact, debates on the Treaty’s place in politics, the Treaty’s place in law, the place of the Treaty in modern Aotearoa/New Zealand and public policy today; this course will also be useful for students in other disciplines who wish to understand the background of Treaty issues. The course has three objectives. First, it is intended that you will understand several of the different narratives that have formed about the history of the Treaty. Second, you will develop and demonstrate the scholarly skills needed to research and expand upon the concepts, such as justice or rangatiratanga, that are used in discussions of the the Treaty. Third, the course is designed to give you an ability to take those concepts out of context, and apply them to other situations (for example, you should be able, by the end of the course, to examine a contemporary government policy without having to write about the historical context of the Treaty).
