Description

Use of the package MATLAB including matrix algebra, user-defined functions, surface plotting. Numerical methods including solutions of systems of linear equations, solution or ordinary differential equations and systems of equations, approximation techniques. Modelling projects.

Prerequisites

(MATH171 or EMTH171 or MATH280 or MATH281 or MATH282) AND (EMTH201 or EMTH202 or EMTH204 or EMTH210 or MATH261 or MATH264). Or high grade in MATH104, MATH105, MATH107 or MATH109 or MATH199 and Head of Department approval.

Timetable Note

There are two lecture streams:

Stream A: Monday and Tuesday, 1.10-2.00pm. This stream is for EMTH271 students doing Mechanical or Mechatronics engineering, and for all MATH271 students.
Stream B: Monday and Wednesday, 9.00-9.50am. This stream is for EMTH271 students doing Civil, Natural Resources, Forestry or Chemical engineering.

The lab timetable has been organised along departmental lines too, so that it fits the rest of your timetable:

MATH271: Wednesday, 2.10-4.00pm.
EMTH271 (CAPE): Thursday, 9.00-10.50am.
EMTH271 (Civil, Natural Resources, Forestry): Thursday, 2.10-4.00pm or Friday, 2.10-4.00pm.
EMTH271 (Mechanical, Mechatronics): Thursday, 2.10-4.00pm.
