In pursuing the ethical basis for business policy and practice, we will look at changing notions of corporate performance. Participants will address such issues as: What is success in business? What good does business do and how does it do it? What are major causes of the breakdown of business ethics? We will also study the practice of business ethics, with the aim to expand capacity for moral inquiry, dialogue, and decision making in ways that will be useful in your professional and civic lives.
This course considers the roles of organisations and individuals in business and society. The notion that corporations are simply wealth creating organisations, with little social and ethical responsibility to the broader public and the physical environment, is no longer acceptable. Communities command that corporations go beyond their economic brief to provide surplus resources in the form of philanthropy and other social initiatives. In this course we examine how corporations and other organisations are attempting to balance the pursuit of profits and good corporate citizenship as stakeholder expectations accelerate the need to better understand the role of corporations in society.WorkloadThe estimated workload breakdown for MGMT333 is: Lectures 12Workshop Activities 12Lecture and Workshop Preparation 48Reflections 8Individual Assignment 27Final Exam 3Final Exam Preparation 40Total 150 hours
