Students develop a portfolio of compositions (notated and/or digital and/or performed live) together with supporting documentation.
MUSA322 aims to help students develop their own independent “voice” as creative artists, and to further broaden the students’ understanding of new music in both written (notated) or electronic forms, or mixtures of both. Students will further develop sophisticated compositional techniques and procedures as well as verbal and writing skills in articulating their compositional goals and methods and their compositional philosophy, particularly in the relationship between their own creative work and that of other composers, works and styles.
Further skills and knowledge in the creation of a portfolio of original works including songs, notated scores, and/or electronic media;Further skills in various forms of analysis of music relevant to the student’s portfolio;Further skills in self-analysis and documentation of commentary on the portfolio;Self-awareness of their own work in relation to the established canon of repertoire;Further skills in various forms of instrumental/vocal and/or electronic/electroacoustic music.Transferable SkillsThe ability to work in a disciplined and persistent way on an individual project; Peer review skills; The ability to criticise one’s own work.

WORKLOADStudent workload (300 hours) will be allocated to:• 12 hours attending lectures• 18 hours attending composition workshops• 6 hours attending individual tutorials• 40 hours completing analytical exercises• 150 hours drafting, writing, documenting, realising and/or recording portfolio content• 74 hours of self-directed study and reflectionIt is expected that all students enrolled in this course will attend all the Composition workshops.
