Performance 1

To gain admission to MUSI141 Performance 1 the applicant will be required to pass a School of Music Audition, to be held in October each year. Each applicant should be prepared to: (a) perform three pieces of his or her own choice; and (b) undergo tests of musicianship which may include aural tests and sightreading. Application for the School of Music Audition should be made in writing to the Administrator, School of Music, by 15 September.

Timetable Note

Times of individual lessons (1 hour per week) will be by arrangement with the tutor of the instrument.

PIANO, STRING AND WIND INSTRUMENTS
•Intermediate Test [30%] organised by the tutor (normally June-July) of approximately 20 minutes duration consisting of technical exercises (scales, arpeggios, etc), at least one study and a piece.  Orchestral instrumentalists will play orchestral excerpts as an alternative to the piece.

•End-of-year final examination [70%] consisting of a solo programme of approximately 20-30 minutes duration.

BRASS INSTRUMENTS
•Intermediate Test [30%] organised by the tutor (normally June-July) of approximately 15 minutes duration consisting of technical exercises (scales, arpeggios, etc), at least one study and orchestral and/or band excerpts.
•End-of-year final examination [70%] consisting of a solo programme of approximately 20 minutes duration.

VOICE
•Half-year assessment [30%] (June) of approximately 20 minutes duration consisting of one technical exercise, one study piece and two songs in English.
•End-of-year assessment [70%]  of 20-30 minutes duration (to be decided or at the discretion of the teacher), consisting of one technical exercise, one study piece and three songs (at least one in Italian).

PERCUSSION
Students will present two assessments:  mid-year and at the year's end.

•Mid-year assessments will be comprised principally of orchestral excerpts and etudes on timpani, orchestral keyboards, snare drum and ancillary percussion.

•End-of-year assessments will be comprised of recital material that includes both solo and chamber repertoire on timpani and percussion.  (This could include multi-percussion and marimba/vibes pieces.)

Note:  Both timpani and percussion must be included in all examinations but  there is no specific weighting given to one or the other. The mark given will be based on the overall impression of the whole programme of works.

All MUSI141 students will be expected to show during their first year of study that they have a very real aptitude for public performance.  progression to second-year performance study will not be recommended in cases where such potential is not clearly apparent.  Minimum recommended grade:  B-

All performance students will be expected to take part in School of Music activities as directed by their tutors and to attend as many School of Music concerts as possible.

All performance students are required to be in the orchestra or choir as instructed by their performance tutor EITHER as part of MUSI141, 241, 341, Honours or Masters OR undergraduates may choose to enrol in MUSI192 Chamber Choir or MUSI194 Chamber Orchestra thereby gaining points of credit for participation in choir or orchestra.  This also applies to accompaniment for pianists, woodwind ensemble for wind players and chamber music for pre-formed groups.  Performance students not enrolled in MUSI190-198 will take part in chamber music, woodwind ensemble and accompaniment as reasonably instructed by their performance tutors.
