Performance work involving weekly individual lessons, performance classes and ensemble training in an approved instrument.
This course seeks to develop performance skills in the student's chosen instrument or voice, and to develop performance experience through participation in solo and/or ensemble music.
To gain admission to MUSI141 Performance 1 the applicant will be required to pass a School of Music Audition, to be held in October each year. Each applicant should be prepared to: (a) perform three pieces of his or her own choice; and (b) undergo tests of musicianship which may include aural tests and sightreading. Application for the School of Music Audition should be made in writing to the Administrator, School of Music, by 15 September.
Times of individual lessons (1 hour per week) will be by arrangement with the tutor of the instrument.

PIANO, STRING AND WIND INSTRUMENTS•Intermediate Test [30%] organised by the tutor (normally June-July) of approximately 20 minutes duration consisting of technical exercises (scales, arpeggios, etc), at least one study and a piece. Orchestral instrumentalists will play orchestral excerpts as an alternative to the piece.•End-of-year final examination [70%] consisting of a solo programme of approximately 20-30 minutes duration.BRASS INSTRUMENTS•Intermediate Test [30%] organised by the tutor (normally June-July) of approximately 15 minutes duration consisting of technical exercises (scales, arpeggios, etc), at least one study and orchestral and/or band excerpts.•End-of-year final examination [70%] consisting of a solo programme of approximately 20 minutes duration.VOICE•Half-year assessment [30%] (June) of approximately 20 minutes duration consisting of one technical exercise, one study piece and two songs in English.•End-of-year assessment [70%] of 20-30 minutes duration (to be decided or at the discretion of the teacher), consisting of one technical exercise, one study piece and three songs (at least one in Italian). PERCUSSION• Mid-year assessments will comprise:(i) a selection of orchestral excerpts primarily on xylophone, glockenspiel, snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, tambourine, triangle and castanets. Timpani excerpts will be included for students who have also undertaken timpani tuition.(ii) A solo recital of 10-15 minutes playing time including the student's solo instrument of choice. One or more instrumentalists may take an accompanying role.• End-of-year assessments will be a solo recital of 20-25 minutes playing time including the student's solo instrument(s) of choice. One or more instrumentalist may take an accompanying role.

All MUSI 141 students will be expected to show during their first year of study that they have a very real aptitude for public performance. progression to second-year performance study will not be recommended in cases where such potential is not clearly apparent. Minimum recommended grade: B-All performance students will be expected to take part in School of Music activities as directed by their tutors and to attend as many School of Music concerts as possible.
Because of the transitory/temporal nature of performance subjects, it is not possible to consider special considerations, reconsideration of grades or aegrotats for the end-of-course examinations. Where illness, injury or bereavement or any other critical circumstance prevents a student from attending an in-course and end-of-course examination, such a circumstances will be considered by the Head of Department, and if appropriate and possible, the examination will be delayed to a time that is fair both to the student concerned and to all other students in the course.
