PHOT311 will be a year long course with specific emphasis on the development of practice based research within the studio context, and will afford the student the opportunity to develop a large-scale body of studio work. In the first semester, students will be assigned the broad framework for a project and a set of loosely prescribed outcomes in which to define a course an individual study. In the second semester, students will negotiate a wholly individual course of study with their studio lecturer in the form of a Directed Research Proposal (DRP.)
Students who pass PHOT 311 will: 1. Be able to generate and disseminate knowledge back into the discipline.2. Understand how to engage in primary and secondary research specifically for the purposes of project-based and practice-led research.3. Understand how to frame, propose, manage and develop medium-scale practice-based/led research projects.4. Understand how to research, frame and articulate a considered critical context in relation to ones developing practice and/or specific projects.5. Have abroad understanding of precedents—both historical and contemporary—for photographers operating within the fine arts paradigm.6. Have a solid understanding of the ethics of photographic representation and distribution of work within the public domain.
