A language course following on from SPAN 101, for those with limited knowledge of Spanish.
SPAN102 is a continuing Spanish course that assumes prior knowledge with Spanish at the 101 level. This course, like the first semester SPAN101, is communicative in approach and emphasizes the development of all four language-skills. Hence, this course has five main objectives: to continue to increase the students’ ability in speaking, listening, writing and reading the Spanish language, as well as being exposed to some of the cultural aspects of the Hispanic world. This course will build on the skills learned in SPAN101 to extend the students’ ability to express themselves in speech and in writing. The overall emphasis is on realistic situations that could prove useful in a practical sense. Since reading and writing can be practiced outside of the classroom, class time will be devoted mainly to listening and speaking activities. Spanish is spoken by an increasing number of people. This course will set students on a path that will increase their knowledge of world language and culture.
As a student in this course you will continue to develop skills in all four areas of the Spanish language (reading, writing, speaking and listening). By the end of the course you should be able to use these skills to perform comprehensively all language tasks specified below.The main objectives of SPAN102 are to enable students to… 1. Understand the main idea and most of the supporting details of spoken and written Spanish geared for university students of Spanish on current affairs and topics related to students’ daily life.2. Speak in complete sentences about familiar topics with sufficient grammatical accuracy in pronunciation and the use of vocabulary and grammar (present, past and future tenses) so as to be understood by a native speaker of Spanish.3. Read edited articles with an understanding of the main ideas and most of the supporting details.4. Write coherent paragraphs on a familiar topic with logical organization and sufficient accuracy in the use of vocabulary and grammar so as to be understood by native speakers of Spanish. 5. Understand significant cultural traits of the Hispanic world such as lifestyles, attitudes, customs and geography.
