The aim of this course is to give students advanced proficiency in Spanish across the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). The course also introduces students to the history and culture of the different Hispanic countries. By the end of this course students will be able to recognise a variety of discourses and idiomatic expressions as well as communicate at an advanced level in Spanish.
The main objective of SPAN301 is to give students advanced proficiency in Spanish across the four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). This course also consists of four main components: the practice of the complex aspects of Spanish grammar, the development of effective writing and reading skills, the understanding of cultural traits, and the improvement of listening comprehension and speaking fluidity. Grammar is taught in a cultural content-based approach whereby students’ linguistic skills will be improved and reinforced through extended reading, listening, and writing assignments.
This course addresses the five key attributes of UC Graduate Profile:Students will be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand and its relevance to the Hispanic world and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.Students will be provided with the ability to become critically competent in the language after being provided with advanced knowledge of complex grammatical structures and parts of speech.Students will acquire knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications. Students will become more engaged with the Spanish-speaking community in Christchurch through different gamified immersion assignments. Students will have observed and understood a culture within the Spanish-speaking community in Christchurch by reflecting on their own performance and experiences within that community.Students will comprehend the influence of global conditions on the Spanish-speaking world and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.Additionally, students will be:o able to employ a range of idiomatic expressions.o able to communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively on a variety of topics.o able to comprehend more advanced level discussions on a range of issues.o able to read and comprehend non-specialised Spanish texts.o able to read and comprehend some advanced narrative, literary, and academic style Spanish texts.o able to comprehend complex Spanish texts with the help of a dictionary and similar resources.o able to comprehend natural speech pattern spoken by native speakers.o able to write essays on a variety of topics that require the use of a variety of verb tenses and idiomatic expressions.
