This course is a continuation of SPAN301. Students' linguistic skills will be improved and reinforced through extended readings, written assignments and aural/oral activities in class. Grammar will be taught in a cultural content-based context. By the end of this course, students will have a broader knowledge of Hispanic cultures; students will be able to communicate more effectively (orally and in writing) with native and other competent speakers.
The main objective of SPAN302 is to give students advanced proficiency in Spanish across the four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). This course also consists of four main components: the practice of the complex aspects of Spanish grammar, the development of effective writing and reading skills, the understanding of cultural traits, and the improvement of listening comprehension and speaking fluidity. Grammar is taught in a cultural content-based approach whereby students’ linguistic skills will be improved and reinforced through extended reading, listening, and writing assignments.
This course addresses the five key attributes of UC Graduate Profile:Students will be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand and its relevance to the Hispanic world and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.Students will be provided with the ability to become critically competent in the language after being provided with advanced knowledge of complex grammatical structures and parts of speech.Students will acquire knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.Students will become more engaged with the Spanish-speaking community in Christchurch through different gamified immersion assignments. Students will have observed and understood a culture within the Spanish-speaking community in Christchurch by reflecting on their own performance and experiences within that community. Students will comprehend the influence of global conditions on the Spanish-speaking world and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.Additionally, the specific objectives of SPAN302 are to enable students to:broaden the knowledge of grammar obtained in SPA3201.acquire language proficiency through conversational practice and listening/oral comprehension exercises.write for communicative purposes and for developing greater precision in grammar and in the use of vocabulary.develop reading skills through assigned readings.examine cultural beliefs and values of the Hispanic world, which in turn students will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for cultures other than their own, including the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand.be able to comprehend the influence of global conditions on Spain and Latin America and be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.develop specific linguistic skills in Spanish that will enhance students’ opportunities for a successful career.
