Description

Second part of a comprehensive language course. The course aims at improving the students' all-round knowledge of everyday contemporary German including knowledge of German language variation.

The course aims at further improving the students’ all-round knowledge of everyday contemporary German by offering a balanced programme of practice in all four main language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening). The course will also offer an extension of the analysis and practice of the varieties of German by learning about regional variation: German in the Federal Republic, Austria, Switzerland, and dialects (eg. Schwäbisch, Alemannisch, Schwytzertütsch).

By the end of the course students should be able to write a short essay on defined topics of interest which include a more in depth study of a short story by a German contemporary writer. The average student will be able to engage in a discussion of most topics relating to cultural and societal issues in German speaking countries with moderate fluency.

The course meets three times a week. There will be an additional optional tutorial hour per week for which a schedule of activities ranging from work with videos, songs in German dialects and other  practical exercises in the language lab will be distributed. WebCT will be used for course management and online exercises.

This course leads on to GRMN310 Advanced German Language A.
