Molecular structure, bonding, stereochemistry and reactivity. Chemistry of naturally occurring and synthetic materials.
BCHM205 expands and develops the concepts of organic chemistry taught in the first-year chemistry courses. Because you have an interest in biochemistry, examples illustrating these concepts will be biased towards reactions of biochemical interest – organic chemistry provides a critical link between the molecular sciences and biology.Goal of the CourseThe objectives of the course are to understand:• the interplay between molecular shape and reactivity,• the central role of the carbonyl group in chemistry and biochemistry.
The course provides a balanced treatment of organic chemistry for those who are majoring in chemistry or biochemistry. The depth of treatment will allow students to continue their studies in either, or both, organic chemistry and biochemistry to a higher level.
