SPAN201 is a continuing Spanish course that assumes prior knowledge of Spanish at A2 level. This course will build on your existing language skills acquired in the first year of Spanish at UC by reviewing the basic features of Spanish and leading into an intensified examination of more complex structures for both conversational and written Spanish, including a wide range of verb structures. In addition, this course has been designed to present an integrated skills approach to intermediate Spanish that develops both receptive and productive skills simultaneously. Consequently, the aim of the course is to continue incrementing the students’ ability and confidence in the four key skills of language learning: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. At the same time, it will also offer students the opportunity to learn about the culture of the many countries where Spanish is spoken.
This course addresses the five key attributes of the UC Graduate Profile. By the end of the course students will... Be aware of and understand the nature of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand and its relevance to the Hispanic world and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts;Be provided with the ability to become critically competent in the language after being provided with advanced knowledge of complex grammatical structures and parts of speech;Acquire knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications;Become more engaged with the Spanish-speaking community in Christchurch through different gamified immersion assignments. Students will have observed and understood a culture within the Spanish-speaking community in Christchurch by reflecting on their own performance and experiences within that community.Comprehend the influence of global conditions on the Spanish-speaking world and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.
